Build an estimated range from explicit uncertainty

Last materially reviewed 2026-09-23

Quick answerA range should come from stated uncertain inputs, not an arbitrary confidence-looking percentage.
What to know

Identify the uncertain part of the estimate

Start by separating known quantities from assumptions. A fixed setup allowance may be known while the amount of preparation work is uncertain. An estimated range can communicate that uncertainty if both ends have a clear interpretation. Do not add a generic percentage and call it a confidence interval unless you have the statistical evidence to support that term. Our range worksheet performs simple scenario arithmetic; it does not estimate a probability distribution or predict a final invoice.

What to know

Work through a transparent example

Suppose the hypothetical fixed allowance is 80, the unit allowance is 12 and the visitor expects between four and seven items. The simple range is 128 to 164 before excluded costs. Explain that the lower figure assumes four items and the upper figure seven. If another unknown factor can add substantial work, this range may still be incomplete. Either model that factor explicitly or tell the visitor that a reviewed quote is needed before the range can guide a decision.

What to know

Keep rounding and exclusions visible

Round the range in a way that matches its practical precision. Showing 128.00 to 164.00 can suggest more certainty than a rough count supports. State the currency or neutral units and whether taxes, travel or optional tasks are included. Product functions can implement rounding, but they cannot decide which exclusions are commercially appropriate. Avoid burying those exclusions on a distant legal page while the result itself presents an unconditional promise.

What to know

Check for contradictory inputs

A lower quantity greater than the upper quantity is a model error, not a reason to swap values silently. Tell the visitor what needs correcting. Test equal bounds, zero where permitted and an unknown upper bound. If the quantity cannot be bounded usefully, route to a human estimate. Preserve the assumptions with the request so another person can explain how the displayed range was produced without reconstructing the visitor’s journey from memory.

What this worksheet does not establish

It does not validate your business rates, make a binding quotation, test a merchant form or predict conversion. No inputs are saved or sent. Reloading clears the worksheet. Understand the assumptions.
